Tricks for perfecting your party portraits
Parties are a great place to capture fun-filled images of family and friends, but they’re also a pretty tricky shooting environment that pushes your photography skills to their limits. The FUJIFILM X-T100 offers a Party setting within its automatic Scene options, designed for capturing these indoor events easily, but you can also produce more creative results by using some of the tips below...
Play with shooting angles
Unlike traditional portraits, party portraits often work well with an unusual shooting angle. This more dynamic perspective helps encapsulate a better sense of energy and movement, and makes the scene appear less static and formal. Just be careful not to push the angle too much, or people may assume you had a little too much fruit punch before taking the picture.
Pop up your flash
If you’re struggling to deal with the lighting in a dark party room, the FUJIFILM X-T100’s pop-up flash can provide an additional burst of light when needed.
Discover the 2nd Curtain sync. flash setting
If you’ve mastered your camera’s basic flash setting you can try using a slightly more creative option found within the X-T100’s Flash Mode menu, ‘2nd Curtain sync’. Unlike the standard setting, in this mode the flash will fire at the end, rather than the start of an exposure, freezing a subject at the end of any movement, leaving a stylish blur of any movement and light behind it – great for shots of dancing!
Try capturing a burst of images
Capture the perfect moment of action by taking a short burst of images of your subject and then selecting the best afterwards. The X-T100 can capture up to 6fps in its continuous shooting mode, allowing you to ensure that ‘blink and you miss it’ moment is recorded in all its glory.
Have some fun with props
Wigs and fake moustaches get even the biggest party pooper smiling. A small selection of silly props can result in some of a party’s most memorable captures as people enjoy laughing at their friends and letting others glimpse their own kooky side. Crack out the fancy dress box and let the fun commence!
