How to take natural looking portraits of children
Don’t believe the old saying: working with children doesn’t have to be the stressful assignment that it’s sometimes made out to be. The FUJIFILM X-T100 is simple and intuitive to use, so you can just focus on capturing that beautiful image. The techniques below will help you to achieve this…
Location, location, location
Plan your shoot for somewhere that the child is familiar with and enjoys. The less stressed he or she is, the better the session is going to go. A photo shoot is already a new experience so by hosting it somewhere they feel comfortable, you will help reduce their nerves.
Let the subject get used to you
Not everyone is a fan of the camera so give your subject time to get used to it. Talk to them, play a game with them and their family, and allow them to get used to you and your camera before starting the photo session in earnest.
Make it fun
Even professional models can get bored on a shoot and posing for photos is their chosen profession! For this reason, it’s often better to respond to young subjects, working with their actions, rather than endlessly trying to direct them. Give them activities to do that they enjoy, and capture them engaging with what they are doing for natural looking images.
Take breaks
If the subject seems to be getting tired, call a break and put the camera away for a bit. It’s better to let them rest and to start shooting again when they are ready, than to push them past breaking point in the hunt for that next winning image.
Get down to their level
One of the most dramatic differences you can make to images is to get down to the child’s level before photographing them. Shots that are taken from too high or low an angle can be unflattering but by taking photos at their eye level instead, a more intimate connection can be shown.
Be ready
Children can be unpredictable and just about anything could happen, at any moment. Set your camera to shutter priority by adjusting the mode dial to S then select a fast shutter speed such as 1/200sec and press the shutter as soon as a moment of action unfolds. If your subject moves too quickly for the speed you’ve set, just choose a faster shutter speed.
